A world of sources.

Geographic data is adapted for clear, playable learning. Here’s where it comes from.

Names, capitals and geography facts

GeoNames, licensed under CC BY 4.0. The project normalizes names, aliases and region groups. Snapshot: 2026-10-17.

Localized place names also use Unicode CLDR and source-matched Wikidata labels (CC0). Proper local endonyms are retained where no published localized name is available.

Maps and boundaries

Natural Earth, public domain. World and US state boundaries are simplified for display; small places may use markers. Alaska and Hawaii use separate insets. Geographic classifications and borders do not imply a political position.

Flags

flag-icons v7.6.0, © Panayiotis Lipiridis, MIT license. The quiz uses standardized flag-icon canvases, which may differ from a national flag’s official proportions. Read the flag license.

Globetto artwork

George, the topic icons and the illustrations come from Globetto’s existing project artwork. Browser versions are resized for faster loading. George’s decorative land shapes are not teaching maps.

Typography

Space Grotesk by the Space Grotesk Project Authors, bundled locally under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Read the font license.

Quick challenge sources

Real capital-city locations come from GeoNames cities15000, CC BY 4.0, matched by country and capital name. Bearings and distances use the shortest paths around Earth. Country photos are credited individually under their own licenses; thumbnails are resized from the credited originals. View city sources and per-photo credits.
