How to play Country clues

Country clues asks you to identify a country or territory from a real photograph. Choose an answer, or reveal an available clue if the picture leaves you unsure. The answer gives you a little more context about the place.

  1. Study the whole photo before choosing. Look at the landscape as well as its main subject.
  2. Read the possible answers and use a clue if you need one.
  3. Check the answer and connect the image with the country’s name.

Look beyond the famous landmark

A recognizable building can be a strong clue, but not every photograph shows a world-famous monument. Coastlines, mountains, vegetation and architectural details can help you narrow down the possibilities.

Treat those details as evidence rather than proof. Similar landscapes and building styles occur in different countries. A photograph shows one place at one moment; it does not represent everything about a country or its people.

Turn a guess into something you remember

When you miss an answer, identify the detail you overlooked rather than memorizing only the name. Then find the country on a map and connect it with a neighboring place, a capital or a flag.

Photographs have individual author and license credits. Open the small information control beside a quiz image to see its source, or use the complete credits page linked below.
